August Update

August 26, 2017 in Uncategorized

It’s been a while since we have done an update and there has been lot going on, so I thought it was about time we filled you in with what’s been going on.

Our big project this year has been to record and release our first ever full-length album! We’re currently in the final stages of tracking at the moment before we move into mixing and mastering and so I just wanted to give you all a glimpse into what the process of recording looks like and what this project has involved.

There are many different ways to go about recording a track, but most commonly what we do is record each individual instrument separately and then layer them up on top each other, which creates song. We typically start with drums, then bass, guitars, keys and the record the vocals last.As you can imagine, there are a definitely challenges in recording an album like ours, particularly when it comes to coordinating multiple artists and bands with studio slots, over the course of a year…or longer! As we’ve been working on the project, we have changed up our system a little found and adapted a more “live session” style of recording, in which we set up a whole band in the studio at once and record the whole song in one take. There are a few benefits to this, one being that the recording process is often much quicker but, more importantly we have found that the energy and vibe that comes from playing all together, often comes across in the finished track, which is ideal! The difficulty however, is that in order to get a good take, every band member needs to play on time, in tune, and perfectly synchronised to the rest of the band. It’s the fine balance between capturing the energy and the vibe but hiding any little mistakes!

We’ve had a few familiar faces in the studio these last few weeks, which you will have seen if you keep up with us on social media. Callum Smith, Nicole Cameron, Tim Kwant and Rich and Mel Spriggs (all pictured below) have been keeping us busy, and next week we look forward to having Fiona Crow in the booth.

I (Andy) was in the studio recently and was able to watch and observe the artists at work without needing to concentrate on playing an instrument. To give you an idea of what the ‘live session, one band, one take’ recording process looks like, then here’s a wee video. It won’t sound how you might imagine it, mainly because everyone is using headphone monitoring:

Recording this way has been fun and I have personally really enjoyed being in the studio with the artists and bands and getting a feel for the whole track, rather than just snippets at a time. Things appear to be on track for an October release for the album and once we hit the mixing and mastering stage, then we’re going to get started on planning a launch party in Glasgow, which you are all invited to. Stay tuned for dates and details to come!

April | May Update

May 19, 2017 in Uncategorized

It’s May and guess what… we’re still tracking our new album! This is a new experience for us as, up until now, we’ve been releasing songs as and when we record them; drip feeding them onto our website and our YouTube channel. This is the first time we’ve attempted a full-length album with a number of artists and so we’d like to tell you about some of the changes we are making here at Rechord as we change the way that we release our music.

Up until now, all of our music has been released for download on our website. We know this antiquated, but it has been a way to make sure our music remained available to everyone. For the first time this year we plan to release our music, in album form, onto a variety of services (including Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and Google Play Music) so that you can buy and stream our album on mobile devices. For those of you that cannot afford to purchase our album (or a streaming subscription), it will still be available for free from our website, as that is a core value of Rechord Music! It is for this very reason that we have held off until now, in using these streaming platforms. The reason we’re changing is because we’re aware that some devices make it more difficult to download music without the use of a music delivery app (here’s looking at you Apple). Our value for readily available free music isn’t changing. But how we make it available to you is, and in more than enough time for our album launch, later this year.Another little something we’re working on is organising an album launch to celebrate the release of Rechord Music Vol 1 (which…let’s be honest, probably won’t be the title, but it’s better than “Now that’s what I call Rechord: Vol 1”… Am I right?). We’ll let you know all the details nearer the time but for now, early Autumn is looking like your best bet! Our hope is that the album launch will be a live event where you can come and enjoy the new tracks as we worship the Lord together. I (Andy) am personally really excited about this and we have some cool ideas floating around that might look a little different to your average music event. I mean…it is a Rechord event after all!

As well as recording new tracks, planning an album launch and organising our music release strategy, we thought we’d line up some new videos for you as well, the details of which are still very much ‘TBC’ but we do expect to have some pre-release videos of tracks from the upcoming album. Things to look forward to eh? One voice you will be hearing on the album is Mr Tim Kwant. He’s booked in to start recording next week which we’re pretty excited about. In case you missed this video on social media this week then here’s a wee refresher from his Rechord Live 24 set.

That’s all for now, we’ll update you on our progress in summer with more details of the album and it’s launch! Thanks for staying with us for the ride. Rechord out.

Spring Update

April 7, 2017 in Uncategorized

It’s been 2 months now since the crazy and amazing weekend that was Live 24. After the success of last year’s event, we had high expectations for the 2017 version. Last year we took a risk in trying to pull off a live-stream that many organisations with much bigger budgets and much larger teams were not attempting. We had no idea if it would work – but we prayerfully gave it a bash! In the end, thousands of people from all around the world tuned in, we spread the message and vision of Rechord Music further and wider than we had done before, and in the process we smashed our funding target. God moved! Would it happen that way again this year?

Yes. Yes it would. God moved as we praised Him solidly for 24 hours!

Andy: Again we had thousands of people tune in, the excitement was palpable, and it was obvious that God was moving in a special way through our worship of Him! People who weren’t yet believers were tuning in and meeting with God in special ways. New songs and new music were being sung to our Lord for the first time. We were being drawn into a glimpse of that never-ending throne room worship of our Lord!

Todd: With artists and viewers coming in from all over the world, it truly is a global event and it’s incredible to have the chance to be a part of it all. The vibe in the control room felt very relaxed, making it easy to slip into really engaging with the worship when I wasn’t running up and down the stairs to adjust the cameras. Some of my favourite moments took place in the middle of the night sets as well as the late afternoon as the natural light was beginning to fade away… such a great time!

Hannah: Five minutes before the end of Live 24 was one of the biggest adrenaline rushes of the whole 24 hours. On the Saturday afternoon we genuinely thought we wouldn’t meet our target and yet within the last two hours, with every refresh of the donation page, we believed a little bit more that there was a possibility it could happen. At 19:55pm we crossed the £5,000 line and I was shaking! It was such a privilege to tell the band that God had moved through the generosity of people watching and we had hit our target! Just WOW!

Live 24 has become a really special and unique time for us and we hope also for you.

So now what? Now we get back to our core task – making brand new worship music to glorify our God. Gus and I (Andy) are currently hard at work scheduling studio sessions with our artists to finish tracking for our new (and first ever!) album which we hope will be launching by Autumn. We’re also in the process of arranging filming for some new acoustic videos – so watch this space! Our activity will be ramping up behind the scenes and we’ll keep you updated along the way. We have at least 3 new artists that will be debuting on the new album and, honestly, the songs are sounding amazing. We can’t wait to share them with you!

We have more updates coming soon – but until then. Enjoy some of these memories of Live 24 2017 – let His Kingdom Come!

January Update

January 26, 2017 in Uncategorized

This is it. Just over one week to go until Live 24. Next Friday at 8pm, to be precise, we will be starting a 24 hour sponsored marathon of livestream worship music straight onto YouTube. Non-stop. For 24 whole hours…you get the idea. We launched the Live 24 event last year for the first time, with a crazy plan and a massive hope that we could tell more people about Rechord’s vision for worship recording, as well as also raising some funds to help us keep doing that very thing; recording brand new worship music from grass-roots worship songwriters, for free. You can check out some never before seen footage of the final set from last year, right here:

That’s right, we don’t charge anything for recording these tunes, and we don’t force anyone to buy them either! All the music we make is freely available to stream and download straight from our website and also on our YouTube channel. This is the vision that God has given us: to create fantastic worship recordings and not to charge anyone for it. It’s an insane business plan when you think about it and it really shouldn’t work, except that the Lord really seems to be in it and is providing everything that we need to keep going and even keep growing. Live 24 is an event that allows us to show you the music we are creating with nearly all of our artists involved and leading long (2hour) worship sets over the 24hr period.

There are a few ways you can get involved really easily. Firstly, we would just love it if on the 3rd and 4th of February, from 8pm onwards you tuned in and worshipped with us. Last year we loved seeing groups of you gather together in your homes and hosting a “living room style” worship session, with Live 24 streamed straight onto your TV. This is a really simple way to help us get the word out as well as be encouraged by how many of you tune in. Why not, during the event, take pictures of your gatherings and tag us in them? Finally, and also importantly, you can help us keep pressing into this journey, breaking new ground in the way we record and distribute worship music, by donating here and sponsoring us as we worship our King for a solid 24 hours.

I (Andy) can testify that last year I was up for about 40hours total, setting up, running the event, singing and leading 3 sets and then tearing down. It was mammoth and it was incredible. We set a target of £5000 and we raised over £6000 (including gift aid) which has enabled us to keep going and growing this year with new music, video recordings, recruiting new artists, employing new (desperately needed) staff, and getting ready for this next phase.

Please JOIN US again this year. Watch, worship and enjoy all the new songs you will hear, pray for us, and help us to reach our target of £5000 to help us resource this next year. There are some other exciting changes that will be happening at Rechord that we will be letting you know about in the coming months but for right now, lets enjoy a phenomenal 24 hours of worship, prayer and seeking the Lord together.

See you on Friday 3rd of February at 8pm on YouTube (link to follow next week).

December Update

January 1, 2017 in Uncategorized

For the first time this year – I (Andy) have attempted writing a Christmas worship song, in conjunction with my friend Stephen Mayes, from Belfast, who has just joined us here at Rechord Music. If I’m being completely honest, it was a strangely difficult process! So much so that the song itself wasn’t ready to introduce into live worship in our church contexts before we recorded a studio version.

The difficulty, I believe, came from trying to write a song that tells some of the narrative story of Christmas, the incarnation of Jesus, while simultaneously inspiring us to lift our gaze onto our God, the same Jesus, in worship. So many of the best carols do this so well and yet achieving all of the above, whilst keeping the melody simple, is really challenging.

Earlier this month we spent some time in the studio together recording the track so that you could hear the results before Christmas. If you haven’t heard ‘Your Light Has Come’ yet then check it out.

In other news we’re pleased to announce that we will once again be broadcasting a 24 hour live stream; Rechord Live 24. More details will be available in the new year, but we are really excited to be running this event again. Last year was a huge success and we’ve had many, many requests to repeat it and we are more than happy to oblige. Stay tuned for more after the festive period.

Speaking of which, this will be our last blog post for 2016 and all of us here at Rechord would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We hope you have a restful and relaxing holiday and may the Lord Jesus bless you with peace this Christmas as we remember the amazing miracle that is Immanuel, God with us.

See you in 2017!

November Update

November 18, 2016 in Charity, events, General

2016 has been a big year for Rechord Music.

We kicked off the year in January with Rechord Live 24 – a 24hr “sponsored” live stream of worship to raise publicity and funds for our ongoing efforts to forge a new way of recording and distributing worship music. I have to be honest with you, when we had the idea for Live 24 in the summer of 2015, we genuinely had no idea if it was going to work out! I feel like that is one of the hallmarks of how we do things at Rechord – we have a crazy idea (which few sane organisations would be willing to even attempt) and then we just go for it. We didn’t know if anyone would tune in to Live 24, yet in the end we had over 2000 viewers, many of whom were finding out about Rechord for the first time.

Following Rechord Live 24 – we started a push to release more acoustic videos to our YouTube channel. We have already worked with 3 of our artists this year in producing these videos and there are more in the works so watch this space!

This year, we have also brought 2 new artists into the fold. This month we introduced you to Adam Baker who recorded his first acoustic video titled ‘The Pursuit’, which you can check out here. The second artist we’ve got lined up for you is Stephen Mayes (pictured below), a Worship Pastor at Re:Hope Belfast and New Wine Ireland, so stay tuned to hear more from him.

You may have noticed that we have published less music to our website this year as we transition into a new once yearly album release schedule. Be assured that we’re working hard behind the scenes on new material which will be included on our first full-length album, scheduled for release at the end of Summer 2017. This is a shift in philosophy for us, and one that we’re looking forward to as it gives us the chance to meet more of you in person at our album launch and share a bit more of what we’re trying to achieve here at Rechord Music.

Rechord Update

September 30, 2016 in Charity, events, General

We have some exciting new developments at Rechord Music – and I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know in person what’s going on as we move into a new season of ministry.

When we started Rechord Music back in 2012, we had a vision for recording and distributing worship music in a new way, helping grassroots worship song-writers to craft their songs and then produce them free of charge to be distributed to the church worldwide on a pay-what-you-can donation basis. The vision has always been that we remove the prohibitive financial barriers from song-writers so that they could share their songs as a gift to the church.

Little did we know (although we did suspect!) that the music industry as a whole was on the verge of upheaval. Streaming services were about to take off and our whole culture surrounding how we buy and consume music was changing. With these changes came big knock on effects for the recording industry in general. Many recording studios have closed down and the session musician industry (musicians paid to play on recordings) has been decimated.

In the midst of these industry changes, Rechord has been slowly growing and gaining momentum. We’re so encouraged by the recognition of the quality of music being produced and we see this in the increased number of artists who want to work with us. At the same time however, the number of people that voluntarily donate for the songs they download have dwindled to just a few per track.

At the moment, the process of recording and producing music is becoming increasingly more costly, particularly as we try to honour the musicians that so generously give their skills and time to work with us. We are currently facing the situation whereby we are simultaneously striving to remain true to our vision and core values at a time while the music industry as a whole is suffering. The only reason that we are able to continue to grow and thrive is because of our incredibly faithful supporters that believe in our vision and donate monthly to our organisation as well as the success of events like Rechord Live 24 that we held this January.

In light of this, and in order to position ourselves to grow into the fullness of the vision that we believe the Lord has for us, we are streamlining and restructuring our yearly efforts to revolve around 2 main events:

Rechord Live 24 – Every winter (Jan/Feb) we will hold Rechord Live 24; a 24 hour sponsored worship marathon hosted by our artists, which will be live streamed to YouTube. Last January (2016) we held this event for the first time and it was phenomenally successful. Somewhere between 2500 and 3000 people tuned in, got to see what we are all about, worshipped with us, and (many of you) supported us financially with a one-off gift to help us reach our target of £5000 (the final total was over £6000). This event enabled us to connect with our community in a way that we have never experienced before and at the same time, helped to resource the songs and music videos that we have been releasing over the course of the year.

Rechord Album Launch – Every summer (August), we plan to release an album with 10+ brand new worship tracks! We will be holding a live album launch event around the same time, where we will have the chance to meet with you – our community, in person – to showcase the new music we’ve been working on as well as share about the vision behind Rechord Music and give away a physical (and digital) copy of our brand new album to anyone that signs up as a new monthly supporter. This album will also be made available for purchase on iTunes and other music outlets before becoming available to stream (Spotify) and download for free on our website at a later date.

In addition to the music that we release on our yearly album, we may also have special one-off songs that we release digitally only. We will also continue to make high-quality acoustic music videos that will be shared with you throughout the year as soon as they are ready.

We’ve been astounded at what the Lord has done with Rechord Music so far and we’re really excited about what the future holds. We couldn’t do this without the support and engagement of you, our wonderful community of friends, and we look forward to seeing you online at Rechord Live 24 and then in person at our first ever live album launch next summer.

Warm Regards
